Fabric Knitting in Iceland

Sjöfn Kristjánsdóttir is the designer of all Stroff knitting patterns. Her husband Grétar Karl Arason takes care of everything else - but it's only a matter of time before he learns to knit too.

The designer Sjöfn

The idea for Stroff (originally Petit Knitting) started in Reykjavík when Sjöfn was on maternity leave with her newborn son Ari in the spring of 2017. Sjöfn knitted a lot during pregnancy and maternity leave and was always asked about Ari's beautiful knitted clothes that she designed herself. The casual suggestion that she should sell her samples quickly became reality, and there's been no turning back since:

The Icelandic webshop www.stroff.is went online on March 15, 2017 and has been growing rapidly ever since. In the first year, 60 new knitting patterns were offered, by autumn 2020 there were over 120. Wool, knitting needles and knitting accessories were also added to the range.

In the spring of 2019, "Petit Knitting" became the Stroff brand. The aim was to have a simple, clear and easy to understand name - stroff means "cuffs" in Icelandic.

The first book with many new knitting patterns was published in autumn 2020, followed by the second book in winter 2021.

The translator Leonie

At the same time, the idea came up to offer the knitting patterns, which are extremely popular in Iceland, in German and thus make them accessible to a wider audience. Leonie Karn is responsible for this. She emigrated from Germany to Iceland in January 2015 and has been a big fan of the designer ever since she had children of her own and knitted a lot for them. She translates all samples into German and looks after the German market.

Some patterns are also available in Danish at www.stroff-knitting.com .

We are very active on Facebook and Instagram where we share lots of beautiful pictures of our designs and are also happy to help with any questions or problems.
