Irma Sweater

Irma is a light and colorful sweater, worked from top to bottom with a multi-colored yoke.

Irma is best knitted in cheerful colors – preferably using your leftover yarn scraps in the yoke!

Difficulty Level

2 – somewhat challenging if this is your first multi-color project. However, the instructions should be suitable for most knitters who have experience with sweaters.

What You’ll Need

  • Circular needles US 8 (5 mm, 80/100 cm – 31/39 in)
  • Circular needle US 9 (5.5 mm, 40 cm – 16 in)
  • Circular needles US 10 (6 mm, 40 & 80/100 cm – 16 & 31/39 in)
  • Double-pointed needles US 8 (for sleeve cuffs)
  • Tapestry needle for finishing
  • 1 round stitch marker

Gauge

16 stitches and 21 rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in)

Yarn Suggestions

There are many options. We knitted the sweater in hand-dyed fingering weight yarn with a mohair strand held alongside. This creates a light, airy fabric. Thicker merino yarns, with or without mohair, work just as well, creating a warmer and less airy sweater.

Guidelines:

  • Fingering + Mohair (for airy stitches)
  • DK + Mohair (for warmer, cozy fabric)
  • Aran, without Mohair (for a simple sweater without mohair)

Fingering yarn examples:
Hand-dyed yarns (sock or merino) in 100 g skeins (~400 m / 437 yd)
Lana Grossa Cool Wool Baby or Ecopuno
Lang Merino 200
Knitting for Olive Merino
Sandnes Lanett
Drops Flora

Merino DK:
Lana Grossa Cool Wool or Cool Wool Vintage
Lang Merino 120
Drops Merino Extra Fine or Lima

Aran weight (without mohair):
Lana Grossa Bingo or Brigitte No. 2
Lang Merino+
Drops Big Merino or Nepal

We combined different yarn types: for the main color and the first two pattern colors, we used fingering weight (400 m / 437 yd per 100 g) with a mohair strand. For the other two pattern colors, we used thicker merino (~200 m / 218 yd per 100 g) without mohair. For some colors, we added a metallic strand.
